What is social listening?
Social listening is the practice of monitoring social platforms and the web for mentions of a brand, product or topic in order to understand sentiment and respond to conversations happening outside your own channels.
Social listening tools are good at finding mentions you do not own. YouTube comments are different: you own them and you can reply to them, which means the useful question is not 'who mentioned us' but 'which of these people is ready to buy'. That is an intent problem rather than a monitoring problem, and it needs labeling and routing instead of a wider search. Listening also tends to measure volume — how often you are mentioned — while a comment-led motion cares about a much smaller number: how many of those mentions are actually ready to buy, and whether anyone replied.
Key characteristics
Finds conversations across platforms you do not control, which is where reputation issues usually start.
Useful for market research, launch feedback and tracking how competitors are discussed publicly.
Most listening tools do not classify intent or route comments into a CRM, so commercial signals stall at the alert.
Listening surfaces mentions; it does not close the loop on who answered, when, and what happened next.
FAQ
Is VocLens a social listening tool?
No. VocLens works on comments you own and can reply to, adding intent labeling and routing instead of web-wide mention tracking.
Do I need both?
Often yes — listening for brand mentions elsewhere, and VocLens for capturing demand inside your own comment sections.
Does listening find buyer questions?
It can surface them, but without intent labeling and routing they rarely reach the person who should answer them.
